Summer Is calling! Five Tips To Staying Fit This Summer

It’s that time of year! We’re going to visit family and friends, here, there, maybe everywhere. Long hours of travel and spending quality time can make it hard to fit in a mobility workout or stay consistent with high-level workouts. So here are five simple tips to keep in mind for the summer:

  • Keep It Simple. If you skip a day or two, but you’ve been walking and sightseeing or running from house to grocery, consider that your workout and enjoy your evening. If you’ve been spending a lot of time sitting, be sure to mobilize your spine and lower extremities. Try this quick movement sequence (here).
  • Pick One Exercise. What if you did The Hundred every day for the rest of the summer? One exercise 10-40 different ways is still productive for your health and wellbeing. Here’s a primer on this exercise (click here)!
  • Easy Does It. If you are busy, chances are you will stay consistent with exercise and mobility if you keep your goals attainable every day: 10-minute walk after lunch and dinner, 10 minutes of Pilates (arm circles, The Hundred, Single Leg Circle, Single Leg Stretch and Spine Stretch) are very effective if you do them every single day. Here’s a quick mat workout you can try (click this link). If you have doubts about any exercise in this sequence, leave it out!
  • Self Care is Not Selfish. Self care is essential when you spend time with loved ones in a setting that is not your usual home. What you do at home is what you keep doing on vacation. If you exercise at home, keep it up during your vacation. It gives you sense of normalcy and keeps you rooted in your own body. Hint: you will enjoy your trip more and will transition more easily when you get back home. • Load up on clean sources of protein. I’m not one to say don’t eat this or eat this. However, protein makes a big difference in how your body and brain function. It helps you feel your best and keeps you away from sugar crashes. Best sources of protein; chicken, fish, legumes (lentils, beans) and nuts. Green leafy vegetables like spinach, broccoli and brussel sprouts are also high in protein.

These are just five points. Take what you need and add it to your self care mix for the summer. Whatever you choose, remember to breathe, move and get stronger!

Wishing you a healthy and happy summer,

Anita.
